Flavor of the Day

Tuttidi market in Duino

Another working day at the composition program at IMFA. We have an initial deadline of Thursday to have our works sketched out, and a deadline of Friday morning for music to be handed out to performers. This is the challenge of a summer music festival–to work under tight deadlines and produce the best result possible.

While the students have been working on their own projects, I have also been working on a new piece for Andy Whitfield, for voice and electronics. Taking a cue from the surroundings, I’ve been working with the first line of Rilke’s first Duino elegie, quoted earlier: “Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the orders of angels?”

Today the temperature apparently dipped slightly, but it felt just as hot and muggy. Spencer, Andy, Ivan (cellist) and I made another trip to the beach to cool off a little. On the way back to campus, we stopped at our favorite Duino spot, the Tuttidi (“every day”), where they serve homemade gelato in imaginative flavors. Today’s new flavor was ace–a combination of orange, carrot and lemon=vitamins A, C and E. As they say in Duino, “che cute.”
