Malta, Week 10.1

Finally, we made it to Gozo! Ever since we first arrived, every single Maltese person we’ve met has said “you must go to Gozo.” And it was everything we hoped and thought it would be—much more open space, fewer people, quieter, and breathtaking scenery.

Rather than describe in detail each place we visited (we had a coach drive us, so we took full advantage and tried to see as much as we could) here’s a quick run-down:

1) Dwejra, the inland “lake,” and nearby Fungus Rock. Awesome boat trip through the rocks!

2) Ta’ Pinu, a not-so-old church but situated on a hill, stunning mosaics in front and inside

3) Cittadella, the old walled city in Rabat, similar to Mdina but much smaller

4) Ggigantija Temple, a massive megalithic structure similar in scope to Stonehenge but even older

5) Ta’ Kola windmill, which was built by the Knights to help facilitate the making of grain

5) The salt pans, a series of square-ish indentations cut into the rock by the sea to collect sea water and thus, salt

6) Wied al-Ghasri, a secluded little stream that flows through a canyon to the north shore

It was a whirlwind, but worth every minute.
