Trieste, part II

Having conquered the organ, we now move into the last phase of the composition program at IMFA, in which the students all work on individual projects of their own choosing. Two of them, Jamie and Evan, have chosen to use sections of Rilke’s first elegie as a starting point, while Ben is adapting a section of Joyce’s novella “The Dead” and Neil is working on a Duino-inspired work for piano and electronics. Their pieces will need to be done in about 1 week, to give time for rehearsals.

Several faculty members and students travelled to Trieste this afternoon to perform a concert with a local pianist. The first half was the Beethoven Moonlight sonata, and the second half was the Schumann piano quintet. The entire group at IMFA will come back to Trieste to perform another concert tomorrow.
