Malta, Week 17.5

For the final day of our getaway, we joined our friends, the Buttigieg family, for an excursion to Comino, the third of Malta’s inhabited islands and the only one we hadn’t visited. Emanuel and Ritianne (parents) hadn’t been to Comino in years, and their kids had never been, so it was a true adventure for all of us.

We arrived early in the day, before the crowds and the hot sun. The kids immediately wanted to go swimming in the Blue Lagoon, which I didn’t think would be too appealing, as the water is still pretty cold and the air temperature was mild. But we decided to go for it…and I’m so glad we did! The water is crystal clear, with a soft, sandy bottom, and the views just can’t be beat. Keegan and Amy built some impressive sand castle towers and moats.

When we felt like we had had enough in the water, we took a hike around part of the island to Comino Tower, built by the Knights. The walk took us along the edge of a cliff, with the most stunning scenery we’ve seen in Malta, and ended at this impressive fortress. We were able to go inside and on to the top of the tower, which gave us clear views of Malta, Comino and Gozo. So glad we were able to make this trip, and also so glad that we got off the island mid-afternoon, just as all the 20-somethings were arriving with their loud music and inebriated selves
